What are Merit Badge Universities?

The Merit Badge University (MBU) is an organized event that is typically held monthly during the Fall and Winter at selected Middle Tennessee Universities.  These organized events offer a variety of Merit Badge courses, some that may not regularly be available in your local District or Troop.  All MBUs are organized by Scout Leaders in the Middle Tennessee area.

Why are Merit Badges taught at Universities?

Merit Badge Universities give our scouts exposure to some of Middle Tennessee's largest and most respected higher education institutions. Scouts and adults become acquainted with each campus and location.  In many cases, the facilities and equipment are much more advanced; plus, a good number of the teachers work in the area the Merit Badge covers.

How do I sign up for a Merit Badge University?

You should sign up at the Troop Meeting. A list of available class offerings will be available to view at the Troop Meeting. You may also contact the Troop’s Merit Badge Coordinator. Initial sign up requires a selection process of five potential Merit badge classes, in order of desirability.

Because of the demand for MB classes, sign up is almost always a month or two ahead of the event. YOU MUST SIGN UP EARLY. There are no guarantees that you will be able to get a specific Merit Badge. On average, most scouts receive their top choices if signed early.

Why is there a cost?

The cost covers the patch, lunch and supplies the are needed to operate the MBU. The cost is typically $12-$20, depending on the facility. Not all of the MBUs offer lunch.  Please check your schedule.
