Inspection Crew

This team is responsible for the distribution of the 'car construction' and 'race procedure' rules, in conjunction with the Pinewood Derby chairperson. Most Pack Units will adopt the District Construction Rules. Before the big race, this team is responsible for identifying, inspecting and weighing each Pinewood Derby Car. Do not underestimate the importance of doing a quality job here.

This two or more person crew should get together before the scouts begin working on their cars and study the construction rules. If there is a question, call the District Pinewood Derby chairperson to get clarification. Do not assume that the construction rules are the same every year. Many District Pinewood Derby chairpersons, along with a small group of experienced pinewood derby volunteers, periodically change a rule. Enforcing the car construction rules at the Pack Unit race will likely assure that the cub scout  passes inspection at a District Race.

Pinewood Derby Workshop

This crew, along with others, should discuss the need to plan a pinewood derby car construction workshop or clinic. This kind of event, typical held on a Saturday several weeks before the Pack race, will not only benefit the scouts, but, also help scouts that do not have a parent that understands how to use the basic tools to build a car.

Please remember that the goal of the pinewood derby event is to facilitate family interaction, not just too win a race. There are several basic tasks that can be performed at a workshop. A workshop always creates excitement for the boys and parents. The workshop should be hosted by individuals that have a basic understanding of woodworking and tool safety.

Make a Pack meeting announcement about the need for power tools at a pinewood derby workshop. It's likely that a few men in the Pack will be glad to help out. It never hurts to ask!

On Race Day

•Set up tables for inspection, registration and impound area

•Measuring tools, scales, magnifying glass other "official looking" tools

•Set up Pit Table outside for miscellaneous last minute repairs etc.

Inspection Team Meeting - It is very important to review construction rules with team. Usually, there are newer volunteers that may not beware of certain rules. Assign one of the members to be the Head Inspector.

      Basic Inspection

If a car passes inspection, only then can the scout be registered.

      1. If the car passes inspection, proceed with registration
      2. If car does not pass, send scout & parent to the pit table to correct the construction rule. Scout must re-enter the end of the line.

Inspection Notes: When a scout’s car is disqualified at the District race, the Inspection will inform the parent/scout about the problem. Most Pack Units will allow the scout to fix the problem, if possible, in order to pass inspection.

Remember that most construction rule violations are not deliberate! Most of the time it is a parent that did not pay attention to details. Errors should be corrected for the Pack Unit Race. Always try to have a Pit Table with various tools, extra axles and stock wheels on hand.

Registration Team

The Registration Team works side by side with each Inspector during check-in. Most Pack Units preform inspection and registration up to an hour before the race begins. Once a car passes inspection, a registration person enters the scout's first name, last name initial onto a Race Log sheet. The Number on the Race Log that corresponds with the boys name is the car number. The registration person write the number on a label sticker to be placed on the car. Some Pack Units place a numbered sticker on each scout to help them remember their car number as it is called during the race. After this process, each car is then passed to the Impound Table.

Impound Crew

The Impound crew places the cars on a display table(s) to be exhibited before the race begins. The crew assures that none of the cars are touched by scouts or parents. With the exception of a committee member, access is allow nobody! Many Pack Units will place some type of barrier in front of the table.

Remember that some boys naturally want to touch the cars. If you leave the display table unguarded, boy will be touching and picking up the cars. Scout will need to learn not to touch certain things as a child. This is a good place to start.

As the race begins, many Pack Units will ask the Impound crew to hand the cars to the boys as their car number is called. After each race, the scout should return their cars to the Impound crew.
