Master of Ceremony (Caller)

The Master of Ceremony (MC) is the Committee 'mouth' during the Derby.  He/she announces all races and racers, all results, and all other race related communications during the race.  The MC may also present the trophies, certificates, and medals to event winners during and after the Derby. Sometimes, the Cubmaster or Chairperson will work together with the Master of Ceremony to award the scouts.

Color Guard Coordinator

The duties of this volunteer are to gather a group of scouts to perform the opening flag ceremony.  It is much the same as a Pack Meeting color guard.  Many Pack Units use one of the Cub Scout Dens.  An impressive opening ceremony will gain immediate respect from the crowd.

Usually three flag holders, depending on the number of flags. Perhaps 3 or 4 scouts for each side of the track can walk with the flag holders. Pick your Color Guard crew as early as possible. The caller should have a loud voice if possible unless you have a microphone.  Practice before the crowd gets large; or, in a hallway away from the event. 10 Minutes before race starts, have the Color Guard scouts lineup with flags (for those that carry the flags) behind finish line and wait for the Caller, at the other end of the track, Shout "Color Guard Advance the Colors". It is a good idea to mark a line that the boys must stop at with tape.

  1. "Color Guard, Advance the Colors!" (signals Guard to march toward the Caller on both sides of track passing him and stopping.)
  2. "Color Guard About Face" (Color Guard faces the crowd looking toward the finish line)
  3. "Please Join Me in the Pledge of Allegiance" Hand Salute! Caller starts Allegiance then immediately afterward shouts "TWO" (signaling the crowd to lower there hands)
  4. "Color Guard, Post The Colors" (Color Guard, one at a time, walks to there flag holder and places the flag then returns to his position. After all Flags are placed and scouts are back in line-up, Caller shouts;"
  5. "Please Join Us In the Scout Promise" (Afterward)
  6. "A Scout Is Reverent to God. Hats off please!" The person appointed to say a short prayer starts.
  7. "Color Guard Dismissed" (Everyone is at ease)

Track Starters

Two to three individuals per track are responsible for staging and starting cars at the starting line of the tract during each race.  Some Pack Units assign persons to "ferry" the cars from the 'finish-line' to the 'starting-line' during the races.
