The Sterling Mountain Crew departed Franklin very early in the morning to reach their trailhead. The Mount Sterling area is one of the more historic places in the Smoky Mountains. During the Civil War, both Union and Confederate detachments consistently made raids into the area to find deserters. There are several routes that will take you to the summit of Mt. Sterling. The crew leaders took the fire tower trail beginning at Big Creek Campground. Climbing 4,075' in 6.2 miles is a bit challenging, however, it’s a steady climb and the trail is in fairly good shape. The first day was foggy with rain/drizzle. Most of this crew's pictures are at the fire tower destination. THis crew definately earned the title "advanced backpacker". Total Elevation gain: 4,075' Avg. Elev Gain / Mile: 657'Highest Elevation: 5842'
